A cortisol urine test measures the amount of the steroid hormone cortisol in the urine

Why the Test is Performed
Cortisol is a steroid hormone released from the adrenal gland in response to ACTH, a hormone from the anterior pituitary gland in the brain.
Cortisol levels rise and fall during the day. Highest levels occur at about 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. and lowest levels at about midnight.

Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) #1
also known as 'corticotropin', 'Adrenocorticotrophic hormone',
is a polypeptide tropic hormone produced and secreted by the anterior pituitary gland.
It is an important component of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and
is often produced in response to biological stress (along with corticotropin-releasing hormone from the hypothalamus).

Cushing syndrome #1
is a disorder that occurs when your body is exposed to high levels of the hormone cortisol.
It may also occur if you take too much cortisol or other steroid hormones.

Cushing syndrome may be caused by taking too much corticosteroid medications, such as prednisone and prednisolone.

Cushing's syndrome ( hyperadrenocorticism or hypercorticism ) #1
is a hormone disorder caused by high levels of cortisol in the blood.
This can be caused by taking glucocorticoid drugs, or by tumors that produce cortisol or adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) or CRH.

Cushing's disease refers to one specific cause of the syndrome:
a tumor (adenoma) in the pituitary gland that produces large amounts of ACTH, which in turn elevates cortisol.
